Choose shingles for the roof and the house

Start with the roof you are choosing for. A full replacement gives room to change the profile and color; a repair has to work with material that is already there. In both cases, the covering must suit the slope and connect properly at edges, valleys and walls.

This guide helps separate appearance, tested impact resistance and installation requirements. Bring the look you prefer to the project discussion. We can help connect that preference to the condition of your Hurst roof and the details the finished system needs.

Compare shingle profiles for the house

The profile changes how the roof looks from the street and how a repair blends into an existing slope. Product availability and the exact installation requirements need to be confirmed for the proposed roof.

Profile
Appearance and selection
Repair or replacement consideration
Three-tab
A flatter, regularly repeated tab pattern.
A replacement patch needs compatible dimensions and exposure; a similar color alone is not enough.
Architectural
Laminated layers create a more dimensional pattern.
Compare the actual product’s profile and color blend alongside the house and retained roofing.
Designer
More pronounced shapes or textures can change the roof’s visual weight.
The specified product and its accessories determine installation details, cost and any additional requirements.

Impact resistance is a product classification, not a fourth visual profile. An architectural or designer product may carry an impact rating, but the actual selected product must be checked.

Color, impact rating and roof details are separate choices

A small screen image cannot show how a broad roof plane will sit beside your brick, siding and trim. A sample helps make that choice concrete. The performance questions need their own answers.

Judge color in the house’s light

Look at the proposed blend with the fixed exterior finishes and, for a repair, the weathered roof. Sun and shade change how the granules read. A new product can be the nearest workable match without disappearing into an older roof.

Understand an impact classification

GAF’s Class 4 shingle guidance describes products tested under UL 2218. A controlled impact test is not a promise that hail cannot damage the installed roof. Any insurance discount is a question for the insurer and the actual product, not an automatic part of the purchase.

Keep the roof geometry in the choice

A lower porch slope, valley or roof-to-wall connection may need different details from an open main slope. The shingle choice does not remove the need to specify those water paths correctly.

Choose the assembly around the shingle

The visible shingle is one part of a system. Its performance also depends on what supports it, how it is fastened and how water leaves the roof. The proposal should connect those parts.

Build from sound support

The deck must provide suitable support and fastening. Underlayment and edge details need to be installed in the correct sequence with the covering. A product upgrade cannot repair deteriorated wood underneath it.

Specify the starts, ends and openings

Starter courses and ridge products, fastening patterns, valleys, pipe boots and wall flashings should suit the selected product and roof. Reusing an old detail should be a considered decision about its condition and compatibility.

Discuss ventilation and written coverage

An attic’s intake and exhaust arrangement should be assessed with the roof work. Read the selected manufacturer warranty and any workmanship terms separately, including installation conditions, exclusions and registration requirements. The warranty guide explains what those distinctions mean.

Shingle options FAQs

Can new shingles match my existing roof?

Sometimes a close match is possible, but age, fading, discontinued products and different dimensions can limit it. Repairability also matters: surrounding shingles must tolerate the work. We discuss the available match and the likely visible difference before a patch is treated as the right choice.

Are impact-resistant shingles damage-proof?

No. A laboratory impact classification helps compare tested products; it does not guarantee a damage-free roof in every storm. The installed roof, storm conditions and written product terms still matter.

Does roof color affect the selection?

Yes. The roof is a large part of the exterior, and color should work with finishes that will remain. A small sample or screen can misrepresent the finished effect. Do not assume a darker or lighter color alone establishes an energy saving or a particular material performance.

Which warranty terms apply to the chosen system?

The terms for the actual specified products and any separately offered workmanship coverage apply. Manufacturer defect coverage is different from a promise about installation. Eligibility for enhanced coverage must be established for the proposed system; it should not be inferred from the brand name alone.
