Build a shingle roof as a complete assembly

The shingles you see are the surface of a layered roof. Below them, the deck carries the fasteners and underlayment provides added water protection. At edges and openings, starter, flashing and ridge details finish the places a field shingle cannot cover by itself.

We treat asphalt roofing as that whole assembly. For a repair, the question is how a compatible shingle can join the material already on the house. For replacement, there is room to select a new profile while correcting the support and connections underneath.

A free inspection helps establish the roof slope, condition and extent of work before a material choice is made. We can then explain which options fit the job and what their installation involves.

Choose the shingle package with its limits in view

Construction style describes appearance and shape. An impact classification describes testing. A product can belong to more than one of these groups.

Option
Useful distinction
Selection limit
Three-tab
A flatter, repeating cut-tab pattern that may be relevant when matching an existing roof.
Availability and compatibility must be checked for the actual repair; a similar color is not enough.
Architectural
A laminated profile creates varied shadow and visual depth.
The selected product still needs the right starter, ridge, fastening and roof slope.
Designer
A more pronounced shape or pattern can change the visible character of the roof.
Weight, accessories, availability and installation requirements belong in the comparison.
Impact-rated
The package identifies a tested impact classification for that product.
Laboratory performance does not guarantee a damage-free roof or insurance savings.

The Shingle Options guide explains color, profile and performance choices. GAF’s impact-rating explanation describes the limits of laboratory testing.

From exposed deck to finished ridge

A reroof gives access to the substrate and details before new shingles hide them. Installation follows the selected manufacturer’s requirements and the applicable Hurst checks.

Remove and assess

Open the existing covering as agreed and examine the exposed deck. Resolve damaged wood and suitable fastening support; replaced decking requires a City inspection before it is covered.

Prepare the water protection

Install underlayment with the required laps and coordinate flashing at walls, valleys and penetrations. Product instructions differ, particularly where slopes are low. Shingles should not be extended onto a porch roof that needs a different assembly.

Install the covering and finish details

Lay out and fasten the selected shingles as specified, including starter and hip or ridge components. Vent openings and their flashings need to be coordinated with the intake and exhaust arrangement. A neat surface cannot compensate for an incomplete detail below it.

When matching an existing shingle matters

A local repair has two kinds of fit: the replacement must work with the existing roof, and its appearance has to be discussed honestly.

Shape and fastening come first

Exposure, thickness and construction affect how a replacement joins adjacent courses. Substituting a shingle because the shade looks close can leave the repair poorly integrated.

Weathering makes exact color difficult

Sunlight, granule wear and product changes can leave new shingles visible beside old ones. A technically sound repair may still read as a newer patch, especially on a prominent front slope.

Replacement opens a broader choice

When the roof needs replacement, matching one old course is no longer the same constraint. We can consider the house exterior and a complete accessory package together, with actual material and installation warranty terms.

Asphalt shingle roofing FAQs

Will new shingles match an older roof?

Not always exactly. Even an available compatible product can look different next to weathered shingles. We discuss the likely appearance along with the repair’s physical fit, particularly on a visible slope.

What does impact-resistant mean?

It refers to a product’s performance in a defined impact test. Confirm the classification on the actual product. It does not make the roof immune to hail, and any insurance discount depends on the insurer’s rules.

Can shingles be installed over the old roof?

That requires a separate assessment of the existing layers, roof condition, product instructions and applicable requirements. Removal gives access to the deck and flashing. It should not be omitted simply to make a reroof price lower.

Does a material warranty cover installation?

A material warranty commonly concerns manufacturing defects. Installation coverage has its own issuer and terms, and some enhanced systems have eligibility requirements. The roof warranty guide explains the distinction without assuming that every product includes workmanship coverage.
